An old stone barn (themonia)
rebuilt into a dream summer house
At the edge of the village of Apollonia, in a land of 581 m2 there is an old, stone building of 112 m2, a guest house of 33 m2 and an outside kitchen next to a large pergola.
In total, the complex includes:
- 4/5 sleeping rooms (can sleep up to 10 people), in two units
- three bathrooms, plus one outdoor shower
- three kitchens (one outdoors),
- an inside dining table and living room,
- an outside large dining table.
Besides the buildings there is an "aloni", which is a very old round stone threshing floor, now serving as an outside lounge and a meditation spot. The vegetable garden provides organic vegetables and the rest of the property is covered with Mediterranean plants.
The origin of the main building dates back to the 19th century. Its local name is "themonia" a word which appears only in Sifnos. As fertile land is rare in this island, typically themonies were built at the edge or at one corner of the field, so that it would occupy the minimum surface and leave the rest of the field for cultivation. Locals say that Themonies were and are still used for secret encounters and illicit flirting!
After renovation the buildings kept their size and especially their natural, non-invasive forms which marry well with the curves of the nearby chapel and the magnificent mountains. They also kept their almost monastery style simplicity and transpire a mystic atmosphere.
The current owners started large scale renovation of the main building and its annex, trying to preserve its primitive character, whilst providing all functionalities and amenities necessary to a year-round residence. In order to achieve the first goal they used only local craftsmen (stone builders, carpenter, plumber...) and carefully selected traditional materials, such as stone and chessnut or olive-tree wooden beams, some of which were recuperated from this or other buildings of Sifnos. An environment-friendly way of building, which pays in the long term.
The primitive character of the building is combined with features such as warm water through solar panels, three-phases electricity, LAN and Wi-Fi connections, remote controlled fans, thermostatic mixing tabs, washing machine.
The inner kitchen is equipped with a large refrigerator, dishwasher, electric oven, ceramic cooker.
Television, electrical heaters and air-conditioning are optional features. As their appearance does not match with traditional materials and disturb the character of the rooms, the new owner may decide to live without (some of) them. The necessary preparation and cabling installations are already made.
The outdoor kitchen is equipped with a large wood-oven and a traditional grill, an equipment able to serve 30 people at the adjacent table and aloni.
The vegetable garden offers a great variety of purely organic products, grown in the dry fertile earth of the valley, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, rucola, melons, spring onions, aubergines... Our neighbour Kostas takes care of it all year round.
The property is accessible by car, has two parking places and can be used by people with impaired mobility or wheelchair.
The house can be rented, partially or entirely.
